Elise Groulx Diggs practices international human rights law and criminal law from a base in Washington DC. She is a recognised leader in the field of Business and Human Rights, assisting corporations, risk consultancy firms and others to assess human rights risks in their strategic projects and supply chains. She is one of only nine lawyers worldwide ranked by the Chambers and Partners Global Guide to the legal profession, which identifies the leading practitioners in the field of Business and Human Rights law. Elise is Principal of BI for Business Integrity & Partners LLC, an international human rights and social risk consulting group, headquartered in Washington, with partners in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Dakar (Senegal), London and Paris. BI services include human rights due diligence, especially for investments in conflict-prone countries and fragile states, assessments of corporate criminal liability, opinions on business complicity in war crimes and remediation programs for victims of human rights violations occurring around large-scale economic development projects.
BI works with a network of partner consultancies to counsel corporations and governments on issues such as: security and human rights; stakeholder engagement; and locally relevant social risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
Elise is an opinion leader who has spoken on these issues for the last 10 years. She convenes the Advisory Board of the Business and Human Rights project of the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights and serves as an officer of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA). She is also a founding member of Cercle K2 (2014), a think tank on issues of security and development located in Paris, France. Elise is a member of the editorial advisory board of Lawyers for Better Business (L4BB, a UK based organisation). She is Of Counsel to a law firm in Paris, Le Cabinet Alkyne, and to a law firm in Senegal, Geni & Kebe. She has recently been appointed as a member to the ABA Task Force on Human Traffcking and Child Labour and she was nomited as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (ABF). In July 2016 Elise was appointed Senior Fellow of the Center for the Study of the Legal Profession at Georgetown University’s Law Center.
Elise recently provided an independent legal opinion on the responsible sourcing policy of a major gold refining company. She assesed a policy manual prepared by an expert consulting house to guide the conduct of human rights and conflict minerals due diligence with a special focus on sourcing arrangements with artisanal miners of precious metals ore.
