Amal Clooney

Year of call:

Amal Clooney specialises in international law and human rights. She represents clients before international tribunals including the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. Alongside court work, she provides advice to governments and individuals on issues ranging from diplomatic immunity and justice sector reform to the investigation of war crimes and human rights abuses.

Mrs Clooney has worked on some of the landmark international cases of the last decade including the Milosevic and Hariri cases in The Hague; the Julian Assange case in the English courts; and the case of Yulia Tymoshenko before the European Court of Human Rights. She currently represents Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, convicted on trumped-up charges in the ‘Al Jazeera trial’ in Egypt for merely reporting the news. And she is counsel for Mohamed Nasheed, the former President of the Maldives wrongfully convicted of terrorism in a criminal trial that has been condemned internationally as a travesty of justice. She also represents the government of Georgia in a case brought against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights and the government of Greece in its bid to secure the return of the Parthenon Marbles from the UK.

Mrs Clooney has served as a senior advisor to Kofi Annan, the Joint Special Envoy of the UN and the Arab League on Syria. She also served as Counsel to the Inquiry on the use of drones under international law launched by the UN Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights. She is a member of the UK’s team of experts on Preventing Sexual Violence in conflict zones. And she was recently appointed to the UK Attorney General’s expert panel on Public International Law to represent the British Government in international law matters arising before domestic and international courts.

Mrs Clooney is a Visiting Professor at Columbia Law School. She is admitted to the English Bar and the New York Bar and speaks fluent English, French and Arabic.
