International human rights law

Members of Doughty Street International regulary represent clients in cases that raise international human rights law issues, including before the regional human rights bodies such as the European Court of Human Rights, the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights and the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights. Doughty Street International's work in international human rights law is integrated with other areas of international law, including diplomatic service and the law of international organisations.

Members of DSI have been appointed as Counsel to the Fiji Constitution Commission, Counsel to the Rwandan Law Commission, the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry into Human Rights in Bahrain, rapporteurs to the IBA and BHRC, international consultant to the Council of Europe’s Legal Help and legal advisors at the UN and at the UK Mission in New York. Amongst the team is the former Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee who was re-elected to the UNHRC three times by the States parties to ICPR, Special Rapporteurs on Torture and on the situation of human rights in occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), a member of the UN Justice Council, Chair of the UN International Law Commission Inquiry into the OPT (2001) and Chair of the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales.

In addition to litigation and legal advice, we regularly compile and conduct training in international human rights law and advocacy for Judges, prosecutors, military, police, NGOs, lawyers and government. Doughty Street International has trained extensively in Nigeria, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Libya, Oman, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Colombia and Tunisia. Team members teach international law and frequently speak at leading Conferences, national and international, on international law and are regular members at expert round table meetings at Chatham House.
